after the rain

i absolutely love watching my kids play. i learn so much from them… the way they delight in the smallest things. like puddles. i always forget how exciting a puddle can be. the kids love to watch the rain, and especially love it when i ask them if they’d like to go splash around afterwards.

i love that they have to touch everything. this used to bother me… “why do they want to touch everything??” i would ask myself.

and then i realized… they learn by touching, feeling, smelling, tasting…

i love that something so ordinary like a puddle of water, can draw my kids to it like a magnet, and keep them busy and happy.

and when they don’t think i’m watching, beautiful things happen. things they might not want me to see. like a sweet embrace, probably because they were both so happy at that moment.

the time i let them go splash in the puddles.

play

“We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.” George Bernard Shaw

“Children need the freedom and time to play. Play is not a luxury. Play is a necessity.” Kay Redfield Jamison (professor of psychiatry)

“Play is the highest expression of human development in childhood, for it alone is the free expression of what is in a child’s soul.” Friedrich Froebel (founder of the concept of kindergarten)

“And forget not that the earth delights to feel your bare feet and the winds long to play with your hair.” Kahlil Gibran

“Play is the highest form of research.” ~ Albert Einstein (scientist)

AND PLAY WE DO.

i heart my zoku

it. is. freaking. hot.

today it’s 94 degrees in atl.

i absolutely hate the heat. but with two toddlers, i can’t sit around complaining about it. we gotta stay busy, and cool.

most days we play in the shade outside with a little pool, the hose, water balloons, and squirt bottles. we drink loads of water, eat light, and make tons of popsicles.

my sister bought me a zoku pop maker for my birthday, and can i just say, I’M OBSESSED.

what’s a zoku you may ask? just the quickest and neatest way to make healthy pops for your kids anytime you want.

all you do is pour your mixture (any juice, or zoku recipe) and wait about 7 minutes for your pops to freeze. that’s it! no electricity, no waiting hours… genius!

did i mention how pretty they turn out?

what i love most about it is you can pour almost anything you want it it. i make the kids such healthy treats! they love kefir pops for breakfast especially. (proud mom moment for me when i thought this one up)

kefir is loaded with probiotics, way more than yogurt and it supports immunity, and good digestive health. all i do is pour our favorite kefir in the molds, wait, and enjoy.

another favorite of our is “green pops”. i use bolthouse farms green goodness which is loaded with fruits and greens.

you can add fruits or veggies directly in the molds too. i’ve been adding mangoes to almost all our pops lately. sure beats crappy store ones, that are filled with sugar, doesn’t it?

the zoku is $50, and worth every penny. (you’d think i was getting paid for this post huh?) :)

i wish i had one to giveaway, but really imagine all the money you’d save buy not purchasing store bought popsicles anymore.

in my opinion, it’s a must for parents with toddlers! go ahead, get you one, and be sneaky with your recipes… they’ll never know :)

what we did

a little update…

Saturday: we took the kids to chuck e cheese for the first time. we probably won’t be going back for awhile… it was a little too hectic for me. but watching kayden’s face light up when she saw the barney car was too cute.

and they patiently waited while my third child played his games. he did win them an insane amount of tickets though:)

Sunday: spent the day going to some garage sales, and Lowe’s with daddy. we have so many fun projects we’re working on around the house.

i scored big at a yard sale too. lots of beautiful old records for the kids.

Monday: Started the morning off right with some cracker barrel, and shopping in the general store.

for the first time we spent the fourth just relaxing at home with my sister and her fiance. we enjoyed a nice dinner, and early bedtimes.

Tuesday: we recovered from saturday, sunday, and monday.

Wednesday: spent the morning with one of my best mama friends and her two kids at the farmer’s market, followed by lunch at fresh market.

more updates i’m sure as the week is over, our days are so busy lately, and i’m excited to be sharing them with you all again:)

little things

sometimes, all it takes to brighten up my spirits is something new and pretty for myself. nothing big or expensive. i treat myself to something small every so often. it can be a new lipgloss or book.

or a magazine about anything but babies, an iced carmel macchiato, or even a shower.

but this time, all it took was a pretty egg crate from anthropologie to do the trick.

a pretty little play date

i absolutely love having play dates. it keeps us mama’s sane, interacting with people that are over 2 feet tall, while our kids play and have fun.

i threw a play date at our house and decided to include a light brunch. i’ll take ANY excuse to decorate…

wanna see how the french toast was served up? too cute i tell ya! little chalkboard paper place cards were used to label the foods.

no brunch would be complete without cereal. my love for mason jars runs deep… i use them for everything. cereal in jars, with a spoon tied on with yarn… too too cute.

yogurt, cereal bars, and fruit/cheese kabobs were served. fruit kabobs are a super fun way to get your kids to eat fruits.

after our brunch. the kids (about 15 of them!) played outside with a little plastic pool i bought the night before and plenty of bubbles, water balloons, and water toys from the dollar store.

as soon as kian and kayden’s friends left, kian asked “who’s birthday was that?”

lol.

what can i say… go big or go home:)

painting fun

it’s amazing what a big bottle of paint ($1.99 from hobby lobby) a couple sponge paint brushes ($1 for a pack) and some poster board (2 for $1) can do to make your kids stay entertained and happy for hours.

They painted on their bodies, the poster, the grass, and my car… then washed it all off with the hose.

happy kids=happy mommy.

a touchy subject

ok, so i know in blogging there are a few subjects best left untouched. examples: views on circumcision, vaccines, and co sleeping. but i’m a firm believer in doing what works for your own family and particular situation.

tonight i went to a monthly meeting at the holistic mom’s group that i have recently found. i go in each meeting with an open mind and heart. i take my notebook and diligently write notes. because, i don’t know it all. i don’t know much at all really. like most all other moms, i’m learning along the way. i loved that tonight i walked into a meeting about something that i still didn’t fully know my stance on.

vaccines.

kian my first born was vaccinated for dTap. something in my gut felt wrong for doing it. the second dose he received made him have a terrible reaction. that’s when i knew i needed to do my own research. it lead me to so much info that quickly became overwhelming. i still after all these years sort of have a “damned if you do, damned if you don’t” mentality regarding this touchy subject.

this post isn’t saying “vaccines are the devil!”  because i don’t believe that at all. i’m only going to share the notes from the class tonight, because so many of my twitter and in real life mama friends were interested in seeing.

that’s the schedule from the cdc’s website for vaccines. did you know you can space them out? even dr. sears, the founder of attachment parenting gives alternative schedules that can be easier for your babies body. did you know that you can find a vaccine friendly doctor in most areas? you have options. you can ask questions.

did you know that a child, from the time they’re born until kindergarten gets 133 doses of vaccines? does this seem kind of scary to you? (i don’t remember the exact number but the speaker informed us it was around 30 when we were growing up)

the thing i do is ask myself do the benefits of the vaccine outweigh the risks? i started my research with VAERS. vaccine adverse event reporting system, is a national vaccine safety surveillance program co-sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration.

we were given a chart that shows the number of cases of infectious disease reported to the CDC since 1988 compared to the VAERS time report. and keep in mind that only an estimated one tenth of vaccine related injuries are ever reported. also, with a vaccintation rate of over 90% in the u.s some of these instances of disease likely occurred in people who were vaccinated. some examples that blew my mind:

diphtheria: cdc reports 33 cases, 7 deaths. vaers reports: 116,682 injuries and 2,188 deaths.

polio: cdc reports 77 cases, 2 deaths. vaers reports: 67,390 injuries and 1,924 deaths.

(sources from cdc and vaers)

this info is there. we just need to dig deep.

another “ah” moment for me: according to the cdc “public health officials do not rely on vaccines alone to control epidemics. to prevent the spread of disease, it is necessary to provide sanitary water and food supplies; educate on hygiene; and insect and animal management”

what about typhoid and scarlet fever for which we have not widely vaccinated against? they seem to decline at the same rate as the “vaccine-preventable” diseases.

i won’t go into all my ah ha moments. but i will say that the ingredients… well shocked me. even if you choose to vaccinate (and someday i might get one or need a chicken pox vaccine for them. i know i have rights. you can and should ask your pediatrician for the product insert from the vaccine they use on your baby. take it home. only want a vaccine for whopping cough and not 8 others? call them, tell them. they may not have a single dose just for whooping cough but they can order it from the manufacturer. don’t feel comfortable giving your 2 month old a shot (hepatitis b) that can be contracted through SEX WITH AN INFECTED PERSON, TATTOO, ACUPUNCTURE WITH UNCLEAN NEEDLES, OR SHARED NEEDLES say so.

want your vaccines spaced out? you have options.

remember, being exposed to a “disease” is not always scary. i hope and pray that my kids get chicken pox. did you know people have chicken pox parties?!

the last thing i leave you with, some valuable info- whether you choose to or not.

1. call ahead and find out what brands of vaccines they plan to use on your baby. use the vaccine calculator. google the brand name + “package insert”

2. keep your own records of each shot given. include date, brand name, lot # location shot administered, and if your baby had any reactions.

3. be aware of the possible side affects. immediately report any reactions to your doctor and vaers.

4. don’t vaccinate your baby if he or she is sick.

5. follow your gut

6. know what’s in vaccines. the list tonight shocked me. chicken embryo and human diploid tissue (taken from lung tissue from a 14 week aborted fetus) were shocking.

no one can make the decision for your family. i just want to help give some info that i learned about tonight for the first time. i know the internet searches can be a bit overwhelming!

love, peace, and happy babies,

sher

hello there!!!

hi dear blog friends! guess who’s back?!!

so after a longgg hiatus, i’ve decided i really miss blogging. i love taking pictures of my kids and sharing with you lovely people a glimpse into our lives. i left because of the crazies out there, but realized there’s nothing i can do but block, and go on my way. i love the friends i’ve made through this blog, and want to stay connected with friends and family who don’t get to see my kids often.

so i’ll dedicate my first real post back to a little update of what’s been going on in our lives lately.

my one and only little sister got engaged to her wonderful boyfriend! this is super exciting for us and we’ve been going crazy with wedding ideas.

we took our annual summer vacation to puerto rico this month. (more on that later)

kian is now 3.5 and kayden is 22.5 months. he’s big and strong and funny. shes little and pretty, and loves her brother more than anything.

we got a new puppy! we found her roaming the streets of puerto rico and couldn’t leave her. she’s the sweetest little boxer and her name is stella.

we planted our first garden. and by we, i mean my sweet father in law did it all. it’s amazing. we have eggplant, cucumbers, peppers, tomatoes, herbs, squash, and zucchini. we also have a peach tree and two blueberry bushes. the kids really enjoy watering and picking their fruit. one step closer to our little farm dreams. (pics to come)

there’s much more of course, and i can’t wait to share with you all. of course if you’ve been my twitter friend, you’d know all this anyways:)

Today we gave Kian $1 and told him he could buy anything he wanted and out of everything he saw at the mall, he picked out a necklace for his sister instead. He was so proud giving the cashier his dollar (and asking me to front the rest)
He gave his sister the necklace and she refuses to take it off. That my friends is true love:)
